On 16 November 1864, Sergeant Parry was escorting the Gundagai to Yass mail coach when he was shot dead by bushranger John Gilbert at Black Springs near Jugiong.

The memorial now in place includes a plaque, sculpture and information on events in the lead up to the murder.
